Home Life
Plantation workers were usually housed in separate “camps” based on their nationality. This helped the workers maintain their cultural identity. Within the camps, families celebrated the festivals, shared the foods, and participated in the traditional activities of their homelands. For example, the Japanese camp would hold its traditional bon festival, the Chinese camp would celebrate the Chinese New Year with fireworks and lion dancing and the Filipino camp would celebrate Rizal Day.
